I only got this a couple of days ago, whilst talking to Angela (Villa Maria, Troulos).
I knew about the jumping in the sea thing early January. Called (I think) Epifanos. Maybe I should know this, but I didn't. It is done to celebrate the christening/baptism of Jesus and takes place after a service in the church above the old harbour. The priest throws a cross into the water and local youths jump in to get it (this year at least one girl joined them too). The person who gets it is applauded, of course. Afterwards, they take the cross round town, knocking on doors to show it and the householders give them cash rewards. Apparently, the whole bunch of jumpers go round, a considerable sum is collected (it's considered normal for a minimum 5 Euros each donation) and it is shared out amongst all participants.
There. I wonder how much of the above is accurate? - I hope somebody else can confirm or clear it up, please.
