Hello . My wife and I are due to visit Skiathos on 7th July for two weeks, staying at Sergios apartments in Koukounaries. Really looking forward to our first stay on the island .We did go to Skopelos a few years ago and spent a few hours in Skiathos Town ,so keen to explore more of the island . Any information about the apartments ,ideas for visits, tavernas etc. Will be very welcome. We have visited quite a few other islands, don't know why we have taken so long to visit Skiathos !!

Welcome Woodster. Personally I don't care for Koukounaries, but absolutely lots of people wouldn't stay anywhere else. Note that there are more toilets on the plane than in the arrivals lounge at Skiathos airport. I tell you this in case you are of an age like me when these things matter. For travelling round, you can pick up a map in the arrivals lounge - you can't get a better one anywhere. Buses to and from town start VERY early and stop VERY late, cheap fare and run every 15 minutes or so. You should be OK getting a seat starting in Koukounaries, but from there into town it can be crowded.

We are returning to Koukounaries ourselves on 3rd July staying at the Eliso Studios and Apartments where we had a great holiday in 2012. There are several restaurants in Koukounaries but our two favourites were Big Bad Wolf and Strophilia. We also enjoyed pre-meal drinks at the Busola Bar and the Agustera Bar.
We enjoyed an island tour organised through the Thomson rep, taking in a few sites before visiting the Evangelistria Monastery - well worth a visit. I would also recommend taking the water taxi from the beach to Skiathos Town (we never got round to using the bus service).
Well within walking distance is Mandraki Beach but it is a bit of a slog through the forest. Enjoyable non the less. Other beaches such as Big and Little Banana are probably easier to walk to. This year we intend to take a boat trip from the town either around the island or to Skopelos, you never know we may do both!
I hope this gives you a few ideas but if you are like me, a great part of the holiday is simply exploring a new destination.
Enjoy!

Don't get a car, get a Jimny 4x4 jeep. (There are some places where a 4x4 is the only way, e.g. Kechria beach).
