We've just bought ours for June. Using an internet firm, we got 1.3578 Euros to the £1, whilst the best rate on the high street was 1.33. Annoyingly, one website showed historical rates and back on 11th March I could have got 1.41.
Back in the good old days I didn't bother much, just got what I got, although each time I said surely you can do better than that and always started by asking for £500 worth, then eventually upping it to £1,000 so that I could persuade them to do better.
But on thinking about it, we need that sort of amount for our two weeks. With a meal out costing on average 40 euros (total for two of us) we need nearly 600 for the fortnight. Car hire for a couple of days, snacks and drinks during the day. Buy ourselves a treat - a nice lady's dress or a fancy lad's gadget and we can easily get to 1,000 euros. So the difference of two or three cents can actually get an extra meal out or the night at the cinema for Mama Mia, or the day out trip to Skopelos etc.

Well..... I got mine when they were 1.29 quite awhile ago now as was worried by the time July came around they would have reverted back, so in a way Ive missed out but Im comparing it to last year and I felt happy with what I got, so Im sticking to that mindset...

You're quite right, Di - although I'm pleased we got maybe a free meal out of our exchange rate, to be honest, worrying about a few euros in the £1,200 holiday cost is just asking to get a headache for no purpose.
I just had a quick look and the firm where we got ours has the rate down by 2 cents this morning to 1.33+. I think last year we got them at 1.21.

Hi, I purchased mine from M&S in store today and got 1.30. I was informed that last week they were selling at 1.37. Probably best rates are still online. Paying cash there were no charges so was a straight exchange.

I would recommend ordering online from the post office then collect from your local post office. The rate at my local post office was 1.30 and we ordered it on line at a rate of 1.35. However the online rate today is 1.33 it also depends on the amount you want.

If you take a print of the best offer you can find on the Internet and go into your local exchange, some of them will match that rate. I did that last year at a branch of Thomson's and I heard of someone managing to the same at Debenhams, I think it was.

I would prefer to deal with my local shops, but economics dictate otherwise. I have tried getting online rates from them, but without success - and I take my iPad in with me to show them I'm not lying! I did almost use the Post Office, but their rate was less than the one I got and delivery to my local post office didn't appeal - we draw our OAP pensions in cash to support our local sub post office, so they closed it. When we went to the main post office in Keynsham, we found that whilst we were in the crocodile queue, a member of staff, instead of getting behind the counter and helping to deal with queues, was patrolling the crocodile and pestering us to buy insurances and funeral plans . So we found another sub post office and use that. I didn't think they'd send my Euros to the corner shop.

Is that Keynsham, spelt K,E,Y,N, S,H,A,M? Is Horace Batchelor still around?

Yes - do you know how long ago that advert was last broadcast on Radio Luxembourg? 50 years.
No - he has passed on a long time ago (January 1977). His big posh house became a fancy restaurant, then a care home and is now appartments.

Last time I exchanged money, Radio Luxembourg was still the main source for popular music. Well almost at least.
Now it's only ATM'S. Necessary 'start amount' in €'s at the airport in Oslo (or my local ATM back home). Then refuelling from one of the 'real bank' ATM's in town, always withdraw in local currency. This way I always get my local bank's best rate. And I don't have to worry about a stack of cash which could be stolen.
