Hello, My boyfriend and I are off to Skiathos for the first time on 24th July for a week and we can't wait! Our plan is to take 700 euro in cash for day-to-day spending and put car hire and a couple of excursions on a credit card. I was wondering if anyone has had any issues lately using a credit card to pay for things given the financial issues Greece are facing at the minute. (We're staying in Achladies) Thanks for any advice, we don't want to be caught short! Nicola.

Sounds like a decent enough plan, but not ever having used a credit card there, I have no idea even how the businesses reacted to them in non-crisis times, never mind now.
We usually take a decent amount of Euros, on the grounds that if we don't spend them, we can use them next visit, because there WILL be a next visit for us. If you're not like that, or if you think Greece is going to leave the Euro, taking only spending money, with credit card for car hire and excursions is a good idea. If they don't want to accept them, you can still go for the odd boat trip at 10 Euros cash a head (we had a great day out to Skopelos and Alonissos). I wonder if you were that committed, might you be able to get car hire in with the price of your holiday (I'm pretty sure Thomsons have it on ours)?

No problem with paying on card last night at Lo & La (amazing Italian restaurant in town for those who have never been) My husband decided at the last minute he would like to treat the family & pay for everyone (My birthday treat ) They didn't flinch & happily accepted the payment of €170 by CC. Even presented me with a small bouquet of flowers. 3 courses including wine etc for 7 people. Excellent value. Fabulous food. We have however brought enough Euros with us. Just hadn't taken enough out last night. Wouldn't normally pay restaurant bill by card though. Especially the smaller ones. Look forward to your holiday Nicola. It's paradise here. Ask away if you want to know anything. We're here until 17th.
