... where are your second and third fav places to visit? I thought while the forum is quiet it might be ok to discuss our other favourite places, a lot of posters travel widely (I nearly wrote wildly ) but if the mods are not happy with this topic then please feel free to delete.

Hi Kathos, for a winter break we've enjoyed Gran Canaria, Maspalomas, & this year for first time, Jandia, Fuerteventura. Off to Dominican Republic next April for a family wedding. Can't say we're excited about the location. The "eternal triangle" of "room, pool, restaurant" Does anyone else hate the AI culture? We did Mexico 5* AI & hated it! Sorry bit off topic! Love the Algarve, Alvor. Also Minorca.

skiathos was my favourite of approx 16 greek islands, never thought we would go anywhere else. Then last summer husband said we ought to try somewhere eelse just for one year. we went to stoupa in the pellopponese greek mainland. After the first day feeling strange, we fell totally in love with the place, lovely beaches ,n o crowds ,skiathos has a fabulous holiday, home from home feel, but stoupa felt greek. Food was amazing high standard, and about half the price and everything didnt come with rice and chips. Lots of interesting salads vegetable dishes, a litre of nice house wine 4.50 omlette 2.50 lamb or pork from the spit 10 euros with oven potatoes enough for two meals rarely more than 20 euros. combined with amazing scenery mountains, gorges so green. A huge amount of historical sites to visit like olympia. weve booked to go back, 2 return flights on a saturday with british airways £280 for two !! Because plenty of airlines flying in ! we will still visit skiathos . For a winter place we love Goa (nov-april )fabulous weather white beaches different culture amazing food and people. We also love short city breaks, and weekends in yorkshire whitby, staithes area)

... if the mods are not happy with this topic then please feel free to delete. Now why on earth would we do that? I think you must be confusing us with TA. I personally don't see any harm in this, after all we are all happy to discuss our holidays and I see us as Skiathos-centric, but not fanatic to the point of excluding all other writings. My numbers still haven't come up so I can't indulge in perpetual wandering all year round, but I do need to be prepared with a long list for when they do. And where else to look but here amongst people with similar likes (and even some northerners for good measure).

Sorry, we like Cumbria for walking, Italy for skiing and Clacton for chips! Southern chips? You're joking, right? Get thee off to the Rhubarb Triangle for decent fish n taters!

agree dennis, some of best chip shops in britain in whitby, and cod and lobster pub overlooking the harbour in staithes does the best freshest fish and chips ever had in a restaurant (including rick steins) and none of your silly southern prices ! I once had fish and chips cooked in beef dripping the most amazing taste, well once a year wont kill you.!

Beef dripping was Harry Ramsden's secret when he started up in Guiseley - as a boy cyclist, I went there with our club members for the proper stuff. Such a shame that since the business has gone franchised and multinational it's as rubbish as so many more - not being in the know, I once had fish n taters from a Harry Ramsden in a motorway service station - NEVER again! My uncle used beef dripping in his chip shop in Bridlington back in the day.

You might like to have a look at this site. www.fishandchipawards.comTo get back to Kathos' original topic, my other favourite is Rhodes. I have visited it more times than Skiathos. The Old Town is absolutely fantastic and I still keep finding little corners that I haven't seen before. By the way Kath, I think it is the Rockers you have to fear more than the Mods! Bob

Thanks for that Bob - there isn't ONE within 30 miles of here. I have of course visited the one in Biggar and agree it's a gem.

Cariad I had Stoupa on my 'to do' list for years with Hotel Lefktron earmarked as a place to stay .. it is still on the list. The Greek islands I liked the best from my island hopping days were Patmos and Paros. To get to Patmos you can sail from Samos quite easily but we did it from Kos via Kalymnos then up to Leros, Lipsi and then Patmos.
Paros we sailed to from Mykonos. At both places we stayed longer than we intended as we liked them so much.
Skiathos was the third island we went to way back in the late 1990's. I've never revisited any other Greek island.
Winter destination is Playa Blanca in Lanzarote, did Costa Teguise several times then tried Tenerife north and south and Fuerteventura but are now settled with PB.
I went to Croatia this summer for the first time and although it is early days I have to say I am smitten ...

Had a couple of good hols in Pefkos (Rhodes) but it can get very very hot. Last time I went was 2008 and they were having real problems with forest fires in the last few days of the hols.

There are so many fabulous holiday destinations! In the UK, we tend to visit Yorkshire a lot (Whitby, Harrogate, Grassington in particular) - husband grew up in Leeds and there are still relatives in the Whitby area. In the Canaries, we like Playa Blanca, too Kathos, for winter sun - been meaning to try Fuerteventura for a change. Not very keen on Tenerife and Gran Canaria. We used to drive to the south of France a lot when fuel was cheaper & we had the children with us - we loved the scenery, pretty villages & the food. Favourite region was the Tarn, near Albi. It brought out the artist in me!!! We've had quite a few city breaks in Barcelona when my brother lived there & we got to know it quite well. I think it's still my favourite city, even though street crime is bad. We enjoyed holidaying on Menorca more than Majorca. We've also had some great holidays on the Costa del Sol - my favourite was when we did a bit of a road trip and visited Seville, Cordoba and Granada. They were all amazing places - walking into the mosque in Cordoba made me . Tre - We've stayed 5* AI in Cancun twice - and DID enjoy it, but wouldn't want to repeat too often for fear of turning into overweight Americans!! (Apologies if any US citizens are on here ...... only joking!) We have also visited Guadalajara (Mexico's 2nd largest city) & found it fascinating but scary! We have visited lots of other lovely places over the years - but none that have the same special magic as Skiathos! On the list are Parga & Stoupa for the future - they both sound lovely. So many places ... so little time!
