Hi kathos we stayed at the Lefktron nice small hotel fantastic, best location in stoupa (like the alykon) next year we are going to madena studios in the same gounds and owned by lefktron booked accommodation only through olympic as we dont always want breakfast. i also fancy trying naxos and poros sometime when i went to mykonos lots of peole used it as a base for a couple of days to catch the ferry on to other islands, we took the fast cat to see tinos and the amazing church where pilgrims crawl up the hill to it and the many steps on their hands and knees.(mykonos far too barren for me)

Kathos, I once met a man in Samos, the author of a series of travel guides. He did several and they all had titles with his stylised name, e, g. Freddo's guide to Skiathos. That's not his name so I don't risk libel. He slated Patmos where he had called en route to Samos. It seemed his travel philosophy was to go into an establishment, announce he was a Travel Writer, displaying one of his books, then sit back and enjoy free accommodation and drinks. His reason for disliking Patmos was that absolutely nobody gave him a free Metaxa. I have glanced at several of his guides and judged them accordingly!

That made me Dennis. We found the Patmos residents to be delightful people and dare I say it very generous. Tre, I've never done AI it really doesn't appeal to me, half board is my max. I've only done long haul once and that was a tour of the National Parks and Canyons as OH wanted to fly through the Grand Canyon as a treat for a special birthday. Bob, do you actually stay in Rhodes Old Town? I've only ever driven through it but it looked fascinating. Just wondering if you went to Symi and if so what your thoughts are. Rockers scare me I will apologise in advance in case any of my posts come through a bit disjointed .. desk top is misbehaving

Hi Cariad, well it's nice to know that my choice of hotel would have been a good one.. back in the day when I used to holiday brochures as a hobby wasn't wasted then and I'll keep Stoupa on the list. Kate, Playa Blanca is ideal for winter sun and especially that long long pedestrianised seafront walkway .. perfect for stroll and sit. I liked Puerta de la Cruz(sp) Northern Tenerife but not so much the south.

Hi Kath the first couple of times I stayed in Trianda and then Ixia, but every visit since then I've stayed in Rhodes Town. The first few years I used a lovely little family owned hotel that had the same group of about fifteen people there every year. It became almost like a little club. Unfortunately that closed so some of us moved to the Lydia Hotel which I have used for my last six visits. Again it is a great, friendly, family owned hotel about a five minute walk from the harbour or the old town. The old town is absolutely fantastic, packed full of history and with lots of lovely restaurants, bars and shops. I never tire of wandering and keep finding bits I never noticed before. I did the day trip to Symi one year, stopping off at the Panormitis monastery before moving on to the town. The architecture is quite different and there are lots of tavernas, but it is such a popular destination for day trippers that it gets a bit busy.

We own property on tenerife (los cristianos) but only use it during winter months, bit of sun in December does no harm. Our son lives in Seville,we love the place, many long weekends spent there. Done Maldives twice, initially thought not my thing, but wife's selection for our silver wedding,,can't fault it ,but been there done that,2nd visit not quite same as first. Next year doing Cuba, 3 days in Havana, booked old American car and driver for day tour, then off to coast all inclusive for 10 days. Flying on dream liner which I'm very much looking forward too But back in skiathos in May,maybe later in season as well I find this a great topic,as much as folk love Skiathos it's a wide world out there .

Balddave, my son flew dreamliner to Mexico for his honeymoon he upgraded to premium(?) seats, he said it was worth every penny and made a long journey very comfortable particularly on the way back when they wanted to get whatever sleep they could. Just to add a postscript to this, he proposed to his now wife on Mandraki Elias beach...funny how Skiathos keeps managing to sneak in

Ye gods and little fishes! You lot must all have had your numbers come up already. At least when mine come up I will have a great guide to a decent itinerary. The best I can offer you is my best ever flight. We went on the inaugural flight with Thomson's or Thomas Cook to Puerto Rico. Flying on a Jumbo 747. Special inauguration gave us free loadsa stuff and it was a good film (Nine til Five, was it?). Half board hotel but the free stuff included Manager's welcome drinks, where I discovered I absolutely loved Pina Colada. And there was a Managers party every day! The Manager's farewell party took place before we got on the coach to the airport. It was so good that when I woke later with a sore head, I discovered that I was on a dreadful DC something aircraft and the film was Popeye, totally disastrous return.
I think I was so young I can't remember much else.

We're flying Dreamliner Premium to Dominican next Easter for my nieces wedding. Didn't initially book premium but we had to ring to query something & they offered us a great deal. More excited about the flight than the location (Seriously do not like the AI culture) They came the our son's wedding in Skiathos this year & decided they wanted a beach wedding too

Premium club class for us on long hall, worth every penny. Nice to turn left when boarding, also benefit of lounges etc, but I believe all seats/service above average

Tre, I don't think you will regret upgrading, if you can get a window seat plus one then you will be in a two seater row which is ideal for a long flight.

Kathos sometimes destination is more important than how you get there, had some excellent and some very bad flight experiences to /from skiathos. Including one particular flight probably around 2001 ,flight with sunbird airlines, stuck in taverna for 11 hours, (worse places to be) before it was decided we needed overnight stay over. Bus to plaza hotel Kanapitsa at 10pm approx with return to airport at 7 am. Not the best experience. But what the heck ,just had a brilliant week in Skiathos, did not deter from our next 20 or so visits 😎

Hi Bob, your accommodation in Rhodes Town sounds lovely. I did have a hotel earmarked just in case we managed a visit to the Town, we stayed in Haraki on my only visit to Rhodes, I've had a look through the town hotels on TA but I didn't recognise any of them to see if I could find the name but then I am going back a few years.
I always thought Symi could be a possibility too. Am I right in saying Rick Stein used a property on Symi harbour front for some of his cookery programmes?

You can say that again balddave! I remember a flight to Cyprus ~ took off on time and settled in nicely. Do you recall when some airlines had the screens showing a map and a little plane flying in your direction telling you how long and how many miles to go? Flying over Belgium the pilot made an announcement asking if there was a Doctor or nurse on board. A couple of people came forward. Some time later another announcement was made to say we were returning, apparently a crew member was suffering from cabin pressure and this was causing some concern. The next thing the little plane on the screen was heading back to the UK. We landed at Gatwick, having started from Manchester, the said crew member was taken off to get the medical attention she needed. We waited for a replacement crew member, then we couldn't get a take off slot for quite a long time. Eventually we were back up in the air with the little plane on the screen heading off across Europe again ... nine and a half hours after our initial take off we landed in Cyprus. The bonus was that after being on the aircraft for so long I finally agreed that I probably could manage a trip to the USA... every cloud and all that
