Those who do not use Facebook may not be aware that the death of John Jackman has been announced on the Old Boomerangers site, which he started and on the Skiathos Lovers site. John was well known to many and will be sadly missed. Bob

John Jackman, I never had the pleasure of meeting this lovely gentleman but we corresponded over a number of years. He lived on Skiathos for over 25 years and could tell wonderful stories about his early days on the island, when the only entertainment was a weekly dance at the Hotel San Remo by the new marina.
He knew everyone, was so very well liked and he had a great respect for the island and its inhabitants. He liked to follow traditions and in turn he was respected by the islanders.
A wonderful man who had lived a long and very interesting life. God Bless and Rest in Peace JJ xx

As a relative newcomer to these sites I hadn't come across this gentleman, but it's always sad to hear such news. I would have loved to have met him and been able to have a chat about the old days - RIP John Jackman.

I can only reiterate what others have said, if the gentleman was passionate enough about Skiathos Island ,to make an effort to involve like minded folk in conversation via the forum, can only earn my great admiration and respect..hope he passed away with many happy memories of his time in Skiathos.R.I.P

John was also an active member of the Skiathosinfo forum when it was in its heyday .. and yes he was very passionate about Skiathos. John's daughter Yvonne, a renowned artist, has renovated his former home which some of you may well recognise by bus stop 16.

Although many of us never had the pleasure of meeting John. What is general consensus about arranging some sort of memorial on Skiathos ,not only as a tribute ,but also a thank you for his efforts in getting this and other forums up and running, or am I just being a sentimental old fool 😊

No, I don't think that you are being a sentimental old fool at all Dave. There has been no mention of this so far on Facebook, but maybe it's a bit early yet. On the other hand, the disappearance of the bench erected in memory of Patsy, a well known Boomeranger, may have made people wary. Bob

Did John get this forum up and running? Nice thought though Dave, however I concur with Bob, Patsy's bench only lasted a couple of years at the harbour in Koukounaries before it went missing and plenty of people donated towards that.

I've a feeling it was a bloke called Woody, or some such, who established this forum, after the original one packed up! 😋😋😋 Bob

If you remember Woody there was always some doubt about whether the 'footings' for Patsy's bench would be secure enough given the sandy area it was in, so if they became loose it might have had to be removed. It was certainly well used whenever I was there .. only managed to sit on it once.

Yes Kathos, I did go and see it the year after it was placed there. Just a shame that if the footings were not good enough, the local authorities might have intervened and made them more robust or found another place to put the bench. It is a shame that there has been no word on its location since it disappeared.

Sorry woody,I was actually referring to the old boomerangers forum, i like many appreciate the time and effort the likes of yourself and others put into this and other forums. Again I did not know Patsy, but she obviously made a lasting impression on those who donated to her memorial bench.

For anyone who is interested I wrote this about Patsy back in 2013 .... Anyone here who has used the BB for a few years will already be aware of Patsy's bench. For anyone else, here is a little background information. Patsy was a member of the Bulletin Board, she was a delightful lady who loved Skiathos, she was very intelligent, warm hearted, well travelled and regaled us often with stories of her life and travels, she became a much loved member of the BB. She continued to travel to Skiathos even when her health was not at its best, then sadly she passed away quite unexpectedly after a short stay in hospital. We felt as though we had lost a dear friend. Woody, Derbyshirelass and I suspect a couple of others on here will remember this well. Someone came up with the idea of a commemorative bench in her honour, donations were optional but enough was raised for the bench and a plaque. Merlin set about getting permission from the Mayor for a suitable site, he also arranged the design, fittings, purchase and transportation by air of the bench for our beloved Patsy. Next time you go to Koukounaries, pop down to the bridge end and there will be the bench under a tree for all to enjoy, if you manage to sit there for a couple of minutes you will now know the story of how it came to be there, thanks to the generosity and thoughtfulness of some wonderful people from a Skiathos holiday forum in memory of a dear lady.
