Hi. Please could you tell me where I could hire a quad/ scooter in Skiathos. We are staying near bus stop 9. Daily hire prices would be helpful and if anyone could tell us about places of interest to visit on the island, via some nice beaches for a dip, would be beneficial. We are used to hiring quads in Corfu and have covered the whole island so look forward to visiting the wonders of Skiathos. Thanks in anticipation.

I can't advise on where to hire. If you have hired quads in Corfu I guess you are reasonably good at driving them. But may I sound a word of caution. There is much much less tarmac on Skiathos. Repairs to the unsurfaced tracks is mostly carried out by skimmer things and bulldozers. Rainstorms create wicked surfaces.
Just saying - much safer in a jeep (Suzuki Jimny).
You will find Skiathos very much smaller - pick up a free map in the airport arrivals hall. They are not perfect, but navigating by one will add to the pleasure of a drive.

Tractorboy, I agree with Dennis's comments, there will be many people who will advise you not to hire a quad or scooter on Skiathos, there have been many bad accidents involving such vehicles along the main road. There is really only one main road on the island, which goes between Skiathos Town and Koukounaries and can be extremely busy. It is also quite a twisty up and down road. There are many tracks that lead elsewhere on the island to some of the more remote beaches which are well worth a visit, but the tracks conditions can be quite bad and dangerous. It may well be worth thinking of hiring a Suzuki Jimny if you want to venture "Off Road", much more comfortable and a lot safer. As for suggestions, take a look at the Skiathos Boomerang Website and other threads on this forum for suggestions, there are many photos of most of the beaches on the Northern coastline which can be accessed along the tracks. There is also the Skiathos Map with many POI's.

My wife and I always hire a quad bike for our stays in Skiathos. Don't be put off, quad bikes are designed to be ridden on tracks and are an excellent way of exploring the island. Some of the tracks are rough particularly after rain, but ridden with care and taking your time they do not pose a problem. We love riding around the Mandraki forest area visiting remote beaches. We only hire the smallest quad bike and ride two up you don't need the big engined bikes, the whole idea is to take your time ride safely and enjoy the island. We have hired our bike from a bike shop in Skiathos town not far from the harbour you cannot miss it with all the bikes outside. Before leaving make sure the brakes are working ok and always wear a crash helmet. I cannot recall how much we paid but it wasn't expensive. Accidents can happen but these are usually the result of driving too fast,so just take your time.

Don't forget to check that your holiday insurance doesn't exclude use of quad bikes. Many don't cover that. Bob
