I will visit Skiathos for the first time in June. I appreciate there are beautiful beaches but after a couple of hours i get itchy feet.....apart from the town, can anyone point me towards interesting sites?

Hi Soppybat. I would say Skiathos isn't blessed with large archaeological sites to visit, unlike some of the larger Greek islands. There are a few monastaries/churches to visit, the largest is Evangelistra Monastary, which is still a working monastary and well worth a visit. It is up in hills above Skiathos Town and can be reached by road if you have your own transport or a minibus can takenyou there from the town. The other place to visit is the old town of Kastro, Skiathos' original capital. It is situated on the north tip of the island on a headland. Although not many buildings remain, the foundations can still be seen and the walk to the tip of the headland gives great views. I dont think there is any public transport there, but can be accessed easily using your own transport. The back streets of Old Skiathos Town are nice to walk around, accessed easiest from Bus Stop 4 (Acropolis) or from behind the old port. skiathosboomerang.co.uk/information/places-to-visit/I hope this helps

Thank you. I always visit Samos but the migrant problem there forced me to change my booking to Skiathos ot realising it is really only a beach paradise. In error, i registered on this site twice and have been rrprimanded and so in future will revisit as a guest only....i dont like causing a prob through lack of tech knowhow.....my apologies. I thank you for taking the time to respond.

i think you will enjoy your holiday inspite of lack of historical sites, which we love too. If you love history Thassos has many places to visit especially in the main town/port, you can be walking in the middle of town an suddenly come across excavations, in fact all over the island are brown signs pointing to sites. it has one of the best museams outside of athensand a huge ampitheatre on the hill outside of the town and further up the hill a roman fort. Last year we went to the peloponnese (stoupa) theres enough places and sites to visit for 14 days including ancient olympia, mysteras, ancient messina, villages of tower houses fabulous villages with amazing churches all within easy reach for day trips. combined with lovely beaches for a day off ! combined with the best food i ever ever had in greece. Also Athens is a 3 hour drive away if you want an overnighter, a bus runs daily from kalamata. I hope ive inspired you for future years.
