I could be wrong, but this is what my memory is telling me hat when we went to Skiathos time before last in 2009, every taverna accepted credit/debit cards.
Then when we went last time, two years ago in 2015 it was just after the big financial turmoil, and a lot of places wanted cash. I think we only found a couple of places in town which accepted cards.
What's it like now? SWMBO can get a good exchange rate deal putting our Euros on to a pre-paid card.
Is everywhere accepting cards again? Are the pre-paid cards accepted everywhere?
Cheers.

I have never used plastic in a taverna. I've only been going to Skiathos since 2013, so no knowledge before then (other islands, but not Skiathos.) I have no evidence to support my view that they will probably prefer cash. Quite apart from bank charges and commissions, since the financial crisis there, banks have not been permitted to allow decent sized cash withdrawals. So I'm guessing they will much prefer cash to avoid charges and restrictions.

There was a post a while back about credit cards. Or was it on TA?? Anyway, we have never found a problem in using cards but generally only do so for large bills. Say when 6 or 8 of us have been dining. I agree that cash is probably the most favoured method of payment. Although, if we (I) make a purchase that we weren't anticipating (shoes, handbag etc !!) I always use a card. Last month we used a credit card to purchase a clock from Driftwood. €60. Bill came last week, exchange rate €1.16. Happy with that as we only got €1.11 when we got currency to go with. Would have been £2 dearer had we paid cash. Every little helps:) Never used a pre paid card so can't comment.

It's still very much a cash economy if you feel OK about taking large sums with you. I noticed when I went to Rhodes recently they really preferred cash even for things like car hire which I've always done on a card in the past. They wouldnt have refused a card but it was made clear what the preference was.
