So here's the dream.
Last time we were in Skiathos we went to a place called (I think) Sophia's Family Restaurant. It overlooks the port, and while we were there a ferry pulled in. It was very interesting watching the assorted people, cars, lorries, etc. rolling off.
Anyway, in my dream I was on the ferry. As we pulled in I got on the phone to SWMBO, who was sat in the bar with the kids. Don't why I had to phone, she could obviously see the ferry, but hey, it's a dream.
I got off, walked up to the bar/tavern, and she had a pint of Mythos waiting for me.
Anyway, when I woke, and then over the next few days, I thought it'd be a good way to arrive. Then I thought maybe I'd like to travel to Skiathos some other way than flying, like in Ye Olde Dayes ™. I wondered how may countries I'd have to go through to get there by train/ferry. It's not as many as you think, you can do it just by going through France & Italy.
But having looked into it, I think it'd be extremely time-consuming and expensive. But a better idea might be flying to Athens - could potentially be cheaper (and more regular flights from more UK airports) than flying direct to Skiathos.
But how do I get from Athens to Skiathos (other than flying)?
Cheers.
Sorry for the long, rambling post.

Good morning. Think other than flying in on the "hopper" from Athens, (which we're doing in 16 days time!!) you would need to travel by road to Volos where you can pick up the ferry. No idea of transport links or time invloved. We did Thassos a couple of years ago. Flew into Kavala & then ferry. We loved it. Great way to arrive.

After flying into Athens there is a good road/bus service which leaves the centre of Athens and takes you to either Agios Konstantinos or Volos for a ferry connection to Skiathos. Ian on TA (SkiathosLover) knows this route well. There is an agency in Athens called Alkyon Travel who can arrange everything for you with buses timed to meet ferries etc.
The journey to Volos takes approximately four hours I believe.

I should have added the sail time from Volos is about three and a half hours on the ferry, longer from AK. Now if your return flight is cancelled for whatever reason you could well find yourself making this journey in reverse ... it has happened many times
