Congratulations to Sue - what an honour to be asked to speak 👏. And it would be very rude not to include a few days in Skiathos too 😄

Having returned from a good week in Tenerife I must say, conversation between Sue and myself ‘ it’s been a great recharge week in the sun but even with a smaller land mass we personally find more that we want to do in Skiathos, certainly better food options. Athens 2 weeks on Thursday, really looking forward to our visit, appears to be plenty of sites to visit, been on wish list for a while, previously booked but covid put a stop to the trip

I totally agree with you about Tenerife. It was ok when our children were young and loved go-karting and water parks but that's definitely not for me these days😂. I found the food most uninspiring too so I didn't bother booking this year (was in Los Cristianos in Feb '22 & '23).
Will be interested to hear about your Athens experiences

YM I know you are up on the most accurate weather forecast sites, can you advise which one to look at I’m more up on climate sites, so I can give you this link for Athens: www.climatestotravel.com/climate/greece/athensAverage mean for February is 10.4°C. For more up to date weather I use the Met Office app. The furthest ahead they’re forecasting is next Wednesday, clear day with no cloud, peaking at 14°C. Enjoy!

Athens in the morning, have to admit I’m really looking forward to our visit, research says lots to see and quite a cosmopolitan lifestyle. I shall post an honest opinion upon my return

YM I know you are up on the most accurate weather forecast sites, can you advise which one to look at It’s looking good. Bright sunshine and not a cloud in sight for the whole week (well, until Thursday, then it’s a mixture of cloud and sun). Chance of rain never gets over 10%, and is <5% for the vast majority of the time. Temperatures 13° today and 12° to tomorrow, but then rising to 15° Sunday, 17° Monday, 19° Tuesday, 18° Wednesday, 17° Thursday. ‘Feels like’ temperatures usually the same as or 1° less than true temperature, never more than 2° below.

I hope that you are having a great time in Athens, Dave. The last time I was there was when Chernobyl exploded. It was obvious that something major had happened as there was panic in the streets and queues outside food shops. It took some time before I found out what had happened. I hope your visit is more peaceful! 😉

Me and a couple of mates were walking round the streets at night, passing a Radio Rentals, we stopped to look through the window and there’s a newsreader looking serious. Then a map of Northern Europe. Than a big arrow coming from the USSR to the UK with a nuclear symbol next to it. It took us a few minutes to figure out that the arrow was the direction of the winds carrying contamination, and not missiles.

Well guys arrived home from Athens last night, where to start, The taxi journey both to and from the airport was an experience, I think Athenian taxi drivers competed in a demolition derby at some point, 5 lane highway we used every lane numerous times, I’m sure if there were 10 lanes the same would apply, so many near misses and fast !, I must also add taxis are not cheap in Athens, get a price before you start your journey. On the journey into the city, I don’t think I’ve ever seen so much graffiti anywhere worldwide, even the trains obliterated with ‘ street art’ Hotel fine, roof top terrace looking up to the acropolis, stunning especially when lit up at night. Athens varies from slum to Mayfair, certainly a city of classes, we stayed in the plaka area, best described as bohemian, great laid back tavernas and eateries. Walked up to the acropolis on our first day, bit of a hike but certainly worth the effort, absolutely stunning. If you like history and take time to read the information available the passion and dedication by those restoring the monuments throughout the city shine through. Visited a couple more sites, equally worth a visit. Next day paid for an open top ,hop on/off bus tour, certainly a great way to see the city and visit sites, one highlight was at the parliament building where we witnessed the changing of the guard, synchronised in slow motion, a spectacle to see. Numerous other attractions visited including museums, non disappointed. The cost of dining out was more than reasonable for a large city, plenty of options and some excellent fare. I would best describe Athens as varied and cosmopolitan, a great deal of poverty and homelessness, beggars a plenty, the opposite extreme being Harrods like shops , designer outlets a plenty. Ever so glad we visited, one ticked off wish list. Would highly recommend but be open minded when visiting.

I’d love to go, Dave - you’ve whetted my appetite. Though probably not as a solo traveller, would need to take a friend!

Just a footnote Talking to the taxi driver on way back to the airport, told him about our visit to Skiathos in May/June, his response ‘ I love Skiathos, apart from the mosquito’s’ .
