1st full day and not a glimmer of sunshine, overcast all day but warm enough to wander about in t shirt and shorts, a few spots of rain late afternoon but nothing horrendous. I must however say that after visiting most years in May, this is the coolest I’ve experienced.
We awoke this morning about 8am which is really late for us even on holiday, ate a hearty breakfast at our hotel ‘Alkyon’ , the breakfast terrace on the roof has a wonderful vista out over the port.
My wife said’ it’s a good shopping day’ I personally think that statement is a contradiction of terms, but hey ho headed to town, first we headed to the boat taxi station to check they are running should the weather improve and we head to the beach, good news being they are. I may be wrong but i think this year ,just by the bourtzi walkway ,there are several fancy speedboats moored up offering private day excursions, i cannot recollect them being there previously.
Walked past what was Mythos bar, now I think named More ?, I personally think the redesign has done nothing to enhance the business.
Stopped at Sea U for a coffee, and for any of you remotely interested we spotted Sarah Moore and her husband of home Greek home fame, nice to see they’re actually using their property and the show wasn’t just a commercial venture.
Then up to the shops, we have several pieces of pottery from Skiathos in the form of dishes, last visit was a flan style dish with sardines on ( don’t ask) apparently this season offer the same print in a different colour?! , found one she likes but on the back burner for now.
Headed to the leather shop where I annually purchase a couple of belts, new exactly what I wanted a few minutes done and paid for, my good lady then decided my man bag could do with an upgrade, so we (she) decided on one that the shop keeper assured us is made from the best Ox leather.
Shopping is thirsty work so a pit stop at the fresh bar for a well deserved refreshment.
One thing I must say is despite some doom and gloom forecasts/posts about major price increases, I have found that any raise is what you would normally expect each year, example being the boat taxi up by 50 cents, bus up to €3 , not actually deal breaking increases.
Lazy afternoon around the hotel, YM large Mythos 5:50 in Alkyon bar. Sat on the balcony watching ferries in and out and relaxing.
Headed into town this evening ate at Baskilos , classed as upmarket but food excellent, I opted for boneless lamb, the wife pork loin in mustard sauce both excellent, a really good bottle of white wine total bill €84, not over the top and will be balanced out with less expensive dining during the week.
Following the meal we went for a stroll down bar street, there is a new live music venue opened up , it’s called Sinners Bar and I suggest it will attract a particular clientele.
Main Street for a drink where we met a lovely couple from Norway who also have been visiting Skiathos since the 90s , great to chat with them about now defunct venues and characters from the past, part of the. Beauty of the island is people of all nationalities interact and actually hold conversations, wouldn’t it be nice if that happened more often at home.
Our aim is to catch the 10am boat to Kanapitsa tomorrow, weather permitting, so a night cap on the balcony and a reasonably early night.
