There's been a slight spanner in works that Helen's middle child who lives in Manchester is expecting in October and is having a baby shower (don't ask, Dennis) in early Sep. Helen will have to be there so we are now thinking of finding a holiday that flies from Manchester day after the event and leaving the car at her daughters which will avoid airport parking. I prefer getting away slightly earlier in year personally but we will have to take pot luck with weather, maybe somewhere that's still likely to be dry in early to mid Sep.

Don’t worry Kev, just post on Facebook asking what the weather is like at the time you’re going. I think there’s probably bound to be someone who knows.

Well, we popped into a travel agent in Torquay that Helen has used in the past and have ended up booking 2 weeks in Montenegro. We were hoping to find somewhere neither of us have been to (neither of us have been to Croatia either) so it ticks that box. Always interesting to sample something new even if it ends up being a one off.

I’ll be interested to hear what you think of it, Kev. It’s somewhere I’d like to visit, but probably with friends rather than solo.

I’ll be interested to hear what you think of it, Kev. It’s somewhere I’d like to visit, but probably with friends rather than solo. I'd hoped to jot a few notes down but work has been manic since return from holiday. Yes I'd say it is better going there as a group rather than solo, though we felt safe everywhere. Weather was good, beaches were mixed in that some were very pebbly but Becici beach near where we stayed was one if the nicest and also our preferred section quite cheap at 10 euro for 2 sunbeds and an umbrella. Treat claims that 'Montenegro is cheap' with large grain of salt. Most prices of food and drink very comparable with Greece really. If you go to very touristy places you pay more, just like any holiday destination. Some of the scenery is quite spectacular but you need to do a bit of driving. Car hire fairly average. 35 euro per day for an old Dacia Sandero with 145,000 km on the clock! Had car for 6 days. Curiously you have to drive with headlights on all the time even during day. Saw several police with handheld speed guns at particular areas where speed limit dropped from one zone to another. Saw accidents on a day out and another closer to Budva so you do need to keep an eye out for other drivers. One of our away days was over the border to Croatia, went to Dubrovnyk. Helen posted some Facebook stuff and tagged me in so you should be able to find posts. Food disappointing overall and wine expensive, many places do bottles only and even Montenegran wine was over 20 euro per bottle. Food often rather luke warm and some restaurants seem to rush you through the courses a bit. Service more business like than overly friendly but not rude, it's just how they are. We enjoyed it and might go back one day but we weren't immediately looking to rebook as soon as we got home or anything. Other places to see.

Thanks for the information, Kev - probably not for me, then. Did you find yourselves saying “it’s nice, but it’s not as nice as Skiathos …”? 😁

In the specific area we stayed we thought that it would be one of those rare occasions where going to one of the big AI hotels just off the beach might be the best deal and then eat out occasionally elsewhere. The bus to Budva was 1:50 each way and its got a nice old town, similar to Rhodes Town. It's definitely not Skiathos though 😄

A quick addition to this report …
Storm Daniel has had more impact on me! I’m on a short painting holiday from tomorrow and we have just been informed that the storm caused bad flood damage at the Sorrento beach hotel we had booked so we’ve been moved to an AI hotel on a hill overlooking the town - with the full inclusive package. I’m not sure if that’s good or bad news!

It was good news - and saved us a fortune! The only downside was that it was a few miles outside Sorrento, up on a hillside and there was nowhere to wander out to in the evenings. We managed to entertain ourselves in the hotel, though! Sorrento and Positano are very beautiful but make Skiathos town look like a sleepy village!
