Vera reckons she saw Scottydi twice today. First just after we set off mid morning, she was walking towards bus stop 18. Then again she walked past as we sat in Mylos taverna waiting to watch the incoming Thomas Cook at about 12:15. But we weren't sure and running down the road after people is a bit ungainly for a septuagenarian of my build and shape.
Today's jeep trek saw only two wrong turns, very quickly recognised and corrected. We went up past the dog shelter and around the mountains. One problem with driving is I don't have the freedom to grab all the scenery. However, I don't suffer the vertigo inspiring edges that Vera has to put up with. I'm not the world's bravest heights person, so I often concentrate on the road rather than the passing steep mountain sides. But isn't it just glorious scenery? Mountains totally clothed in various greens. We paused for one of our photos behind a fire watch vehicle. Vera thought it was a boring job, but I thought it was a great way to spend the day, sitting on a balmy mountainside supposedly looking out for fires, with your bottle of pop and a packet of sandwiches.
Vera cheated again at the beach this morning. I have decided to hold the moral high ground and let her beat me, but I'll see about getting my own back in nine weeks and two days time when we are back here. The sea this morning was calmer than our swimming pool, but we only had a few sets of skittering fishes. The fluorescent walking woman still marches along determinedly. Part way through her programme, she goes into the Skiathos Bay hotel for a few minutes. I think it's for a mid walk pint, but Vera disagrees. The fluorescent joggers seem to have disappeared, no more sweaty trotters passing us as we stroll to and from the beach. I fear the worst for them - either heart-attacked mid jog, or flattened by a passing quad driver. They impress me, those intrepid quad people, grinding and bouncing along like they enjoy hanging on for grim death, half naked to prove they enjoy chasing the rays.
