Well, here we are, nearly a fortnight and nobody has replied to my emails. At this rate, I shall be getting there to fix it myself in just over six weeks. Except that me and fixing things are an oxymoron. But if I can find the town hall I can call round and sound unhappy at them.

Go get 'em Dennis. The Town Hall is a couple of streets back from the Paralia, on the corner of Agalianou and Nikotsara. It is marked on the maps that are available in the arrivals hall at the airport. Bob

I found another email address and tried that - dimos@n-skiathos. The response has been exactly as before with the others, namely zilch.
GRRRRRRRRR! Now I'm going to have to find the town hall in about 4 weeks' time.

Ooops. I've just realised I have no idea how to fix webcams and we land day after tomorrow.
Do you have to unscrew things? Or would a sharp smack upside its head do?

Well, I'll try. But please do have a quick glance at the top of this page where I say that "me and fixing things are an oxymoron". So don't hold yer breath!

UPDATE, SUCCESS AT LAST. Well, success insofar as I have seen and spoken to THE MAN. I went looking for the town hall this afternoon. First directions were "Over there, not the first road, but second small road on the right and it's up there". That led to a T junction, not a town hall so I had to ask again. The man asked if we wanted the mayor for an application to get married. ROFL. . But he pointed it out - we had actually got there, just needed to see the actual building. So I went in and smiled nicely at the nice lady and asked if it was possible to speak to the man about the internet camera. "Up the stairs, second door on the right". As is usual, no signs on the doors, it was open and a man was on the phone, surrounded by computer screens so it looked hopeful. After a few minutes he put the phone down and I was able to enter and ask about the camera. "Ah, it's broken" with a rueful look on his face. Yes I know, but I have come to see if it can be mended. The conversation was quite protracted as I needed to convince him that we all need the views in winter and indeed as we approach our flight dates and it will encourage more people to come and contribute to the economy. So he said they want to repair it, but the whole system was broken by lightning and needs to be replaced. Lorra, lorra money and they need to get that from the government. They hope. But in today's climate, I fancy their chances are pretty remote. I thanked him profusely and left. Some way up the road, I suddenly thought it might be a worthwhile project for boomerangers to donate to. I'd be happy to pledge a tenner or more if we could arrange it. Anybody up for setting it up? Then I'll go in again and ask him how much they need (maybe a faint hope as I rather think they haven't even got an estimate).

Well done Dennis. You're certainly a man of your word! I don't have the knowledge to set something up, but I would definitely be happy to chip in if somebody does. Mind you, I imagine that the Town Hall has a lot more on their plate at the moment. I'm sorry that the weather is such that you were able to do this. I hope it improves from tomorrow. Bob

You know, I think I might just go in and see if he has an estimate. We're going into town most days so it could be easy. I'll see.

And it might just turn into one of my famous tutorials - on how to setup a donation site.

I have not posted before but have enjoyed all you posts Dennis so you can count me in for a tenner. Just wondering if there is an webcam/cctv engineer in the boomerangers who could be on a busmans holiday and maybee fix it for a few Mythos?

Just wondering if there is an webcam/cctv engineer in the boomerangers who could be on a busmans holiday and maybee fix it for a few Mythos? Lee of Jules and Lee is pretty bright - he's fixed up repeaters for the wifi at Villa Maria so that now I can surf from my bed instead of leaning out over the balcony railing. But they're not due back here until September and I don't know if he runs to webcams.

I went in to see the nice man again this afternoon. He has repaired all the infrastructure and all that is needed now is a new camera. The existing (extinct) one is AXIS 213PTZ, which has been discontinued and a more recent one is the 214PTZ. We looked it up on his Amazon and converted the Euros and Dollars prices to around £800. That seems possible for a website collection - just 80 donations of a tenner in simple terms. I would think some people would only afford £5, though. Anyway, I told him I'd see if anything could be done, maybe even me bringing one from UK when we come back in September.
He said not to do anything definite just yet as he is hoping for funds if/when the present dodgy Greek situation gets sorted out. He has given me his email address (and it works because we have exchanged simple greetings) for me to be in touch later to see how things are going.
In the meantime, I think it might be a good idea to set up a thread with a poll, asking for willingness to make a donation, say a poll of different amounts ranging from £5 to £20 and maybe "more" to test the water. So now I have to go try setting up a poll - I seem to be getting really geeky, don't I?

Well he does seem a very nice man and you have obviously made your mark there Dennis. Just goes to show what the personal touch can do and now you have also got yourself a new friend. Like the idea of a poll as you can then see how possible it would be to raise the funds. Very kind though of the 'nice man' to advise you that he may be able to organise a camera. Does he have a name?
